Het werk van Ellen Yiu’s laat zich lezen als een soort visueel dagboek waarin ze persoonlijke verhalen op een bijzondere manier tastbaar maakt. Voor haar tentoonstelling ‘Consolations for a Broken Daughter’ in Kunstenlab maakte ze nieuw werk over de complexe relatie tussen moeder en dochter. Werk dat, zoals altijd, begint bij haar eigen ervaringen maar uiteindelijk het persoonlijke overstijgt. In de grote zaal laat ze twee cirkelvormige installaties zien, bestaande uit verschillende, kleinere objecten. De installatie is tijdens de opening, voor het eerst binnen haar kunstenaarspraktijk, ook het toneel voor een performance, waarvoor Yiu zelf de kostuums ontwikkelde. En binnenkort is een videoregistratie van de performance in de tentoonstelling te zien. 

Ellen Yiu groeide op in Hong Kong maar woont al sinds haar twaalfde in Europa, toen ze China verliet om in haar eentje aan een kostschool in Engeland te studeren. Het verlaten van haar geboortegrond en familiebracht een spanning met zich mee tussen onafhankelijkheid en ontworteling, die nog steeds in haar werk is terug te vinden. Yiu vertrekt vanuit haar persoonlijke geschiedenis, de taoïstische filosofie en het lichaam als bron van kennis om te onderzoeken hoe thema’s als identiteit, genezing, intimiteit en traditie zich tot elkaar verhouden. 

Haar werk laat zich niet makkelijk in een paar woorden vangen. Het is een veelheid aan schijnbare tegenstellingen: het is groot en klein, conceptueel en materieel, grappig en verdrietig en zowel persoonlijk als universeel. Op die manier weet ze met haar werk een gelaagdheid te bereiken die dicht bij de complexiteit van de menselijke ervaring komt. Ze gebruikt verschillende materialen, zoals papier, hout, medicinale planten en textiel, om installaties te maken die meestal bestaan uit kleine objecten met grote, onderliggende verhalen. 'Small things building up to a big thing', zoals ze het zelf omschrijft. Niet alleen in de letterlijke zin, maar ook in de figuurlijke zin. Haar onderwerpen tast ze op een intuïtieve manier af door middel van arbeidsintensieve en vaak traditionele maakprocessen zoals weven, snijden en ander handwerk. Het maakproces is voor haar even belangrijk als het eindresultaat. Dit weerspiegelt het taoïstisch denken waarin betekenis ontstaat in het handelen zelf. Een deel van het maakproces en de beslissingen die tot de uiteindelijke installatie in Kunstenlab leiden worden dan ook pas tijdens de opbouw genomen. 

In ‘Consolations for a Broken Daughter’ verkent ze de complexe relatie tussen moeder en dochter die gevormd wordt door gehechtheid en zorg, maar ook door traditie, conflict en transformatie. De tentoonstelling belichaamt cycli van vasthouden en loslaten en het zoeken naar een balans tussen die twee. De installatie in Kunstenlab bestaat uit twee cirkels die elkaar spiegelen en waarvan elke cirkel één kant van de moeder-dochter band vertegenwoordigt. De cirkel en de patronen daarbinnen zijn terugkerende symbolen uit de klassieke Chinese I Tjing (ook wel ‘Het Boek der Veranderingen’), waarin de tijd, het lot en transformatie als cyclisch in plaats van lineair worden begrepen. De eerste cirkel in de ruimte is gevuld met objecten die voor Yiu verbonden zijn aan thuis, identiteit en opgehoopte herinneringen. De tweede cirkel vertegenwoordigt de psychologische en emotionele echo van de eerste en drukt juist afwezigheid, verlangen en projectie uit. Ellen Yiu nodigt met de tentoonstelling bezoekers uit om de spanning tussen intimiteit en autonomie, herinnering en projectie, zorg en begrenzing emotioneel te komen ervaren. 

'Consolations for a Broken Daughter' werd op zondag 12 april geopend met een performance van twee dansers - een moeder en dochter. Door middel van beweging belichamen zij de spanning en diepte van de moederlijke band, waarbij zij afstand en verbinding onderhandelen terwijl zij een gedeeld kostuum dragen dat kan worden aangepast om grenzen te verschuiven. De videoregistratie van deze performance is binnenkort te zien in de tentoonstelling.

Ellen Yiu’s work can be read as a kind of visual diary in which she makes personal stories tangible in a distinctive way. For her exhibition ‘Consolations for a Broken Daughter’ at Kunstenlab, she created new work about the complex relationship between mother and daughter—work that, as always, begins with her own experiences but ultimately transcends the personal. In the main exhibition space, she constructs two circular installations composed of various smaller objects. For the first time within her artistic practice, the installation also serves as the stage for a performance, for which Yiu developed the costumes. 

Ellen Yiu grew up in Hong Kong but has lived in Europe since the age of twelve, when she left to attend a boarding school in England by herself. From this early dislocation emerged a quiet, diasporic tension between independence and unrootedness, that is reflected in her work. Yiu draws from her personal history, Taoist philosophy, and embodied knowledge to explore how themes such as identity, healing, intimacy, and tradition relate to one another. 

Her work is not easily captured in a few words. It encompasses a multitude of apparent contradictions: it is large and small, conceptual and material, humorous and sorrowful and both personal and universal. In this way, she manages to achieve a layeredness in her work that closely resembles the complexity of human experience. She uses a variety of materials—such as paper, wood, medicinal plants, and textiles—to create installations that typically consist of multiple small objects, carrying large underlying narratives. “Small things building up to a big thing,” as she describes it—not only in a literal sense, but also metaphorically. She approaches her subjects intuitively through labor-intensive and often traditional making processes such as weaving, carving, and other forms of handwork. For her, the process of making is just as important as the final result. This reflects Taoist thought, in which meaning emerges through the act of making itself. Accordingly, part of the making process and the decisions that lead to the final installation at Kunstenlab are made in the space during the construction period. 

In Consolations for a Broken Daughter, she explores the complex relationship between mother and daughter, shaped by attachment and care, but also by tradition, conflict, and transformation. The exhibition embodies cycles of holding on and letting go, and the search for balance between the two. The installation at Kunstenlab consists of two circles that mirror one another, each representing one side of the mother–daughter bond. The circle and its internal patterns are recurring symbols from the classical Chinese I Ching (also known as The Book of Changes), in which time, fate, and transformation are understood as cyclical rather than linear. The first circle in the space is filled with objects that, for Ellen Yiu, are connected to home, identity, and accumulated memories. The second circle represents the psychological and emotional echo of the first, expressing absence, longing, and projection. With this exhibition, Ellen Yiu invites viewers to emotionally experience the tension between intimacy and autonomy, memory and projection, care and control. 

During the opening, a performance by two dancers—a mother and daughter—activates the installation. Through movement, they embody the tension and depth of the maternal bond, negotiating distance and connection while wearing a shared costume that can be adjusted to shift boundaries. A video recording of this performance will be included in the exhibition.

'Consolations for a Broken Daughter' by Ellen Yiu opens on Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 PM at Kunstenlab, along with the exhibitions by Jeroen van Westen and Michael Rhebergen You are most welcome.
